Last week, Group One of the Top 17 set the scene for what is going to be a tough competition with their rousing performances. But this week, Group Two showed that they too were ready to move the audience and get them moving with their pipes.
This week’s contestants gave everyone a taste of what to expect in tonight’s show with their group performance of Cassper Nyovest’s Move For Me. |
Continuing on the theme of Trending, this week’s contestants gave performances to be proud of, with the judges giving them overall positive feedback. An excellent performance by Umlazi KwaZulu-Natal’s Sneziey Msomi proved it is no mistake she has come this far with her spiritual performance of SbuNoah’s Getsemane. The Judges were emphatic in their feedback - she belonged to the stage. Randall Abrahams said her voice was on point. While Unathi Nkayi said she could visualize in the Top 10. Somizi Mhlongo said her song choice was possibly the smartest song choice in in the history of Idols. So confident was he of her performance, that he bet if she does not make it to Top 10, he will shave off his hair and appear on the show topless.

Representing the Gheighs, Capetonian Craig Jordaan’s rendition of Sam Smith’s Dancing With A Stranger earned him a “whoo shem” from Somizi. But it was this year’s youngest contestant and Telkom pop-up auditions discovery from Port Elizabeth, Micayla Oelofse, who made history with a hattrick of “whoo shems”, led by none other than Randall himself. Her performance, said Somizi, was perfection. “You are a pop star!” he said, while Unathi commended her song choice, saying she had now showed she was a versatile performer.

This year’s oldest contestant, 30-year-old Innocentia Msibi from Stilfontein in the North West province, closed off the show with a powerful performance of Alessia Cara’s Scars To Your Beautiful. Unathi said she loved watching her evolve through the competition, likening her to a butterfly emerging out of its cocoon, while Somizi called her performance memorable. Randall remarked that he was interested to see what the votes would like next week after such excellent performances.

It is now in the hands of the voters, who now have to decide which contestants will go home and which contestants will continue on their quest to become the next Mzansi Idol. Five contestants from Group One and four contestants from Group Two with the highest number of votes from their respective weeks will secure their spots in the top 10, while one contestant with the highest number of votes from either week will complete the Top 10 as a wildcard entry. The results will be announced in next week’s show.
