Hello, hello, Hi! This past weekend I was going through the YouTube socials on my telly not knowing what to watch, so I was just checking on everything that looked interesting there. I then suddenly remembered a media colleague, Selloane, posted something about Gareth Cliff’s YouTube channel. I searched Gareth Cliff and the interview with Unathi Nkayi came up. And what an interview it was!
I used to have a crush on Gareth Cliff, his radio voice and opinions made me think and interrogate my views at all times. I remember I would change between radio stations; I would one minute listen to FiveFM and the next minute I’m on Umhlobo Wenene. I did that with Gareth and Dj Fresh and CK August (Mthobeli) of Umhlobo Wenene. Those three really did radio good.
Back to the Unathi, the entire podcast is candid, this is the very first time we hear and see Unathi being this honest and not showing any signs of constraint. We all know that Unathi knows how to best give the sweet persona, but this time around mohgurl was willing to get down and dirty. Her bravery is admirable.
On the podcast Unathi speaks about her friendship with Somizi, how the end of it began. According to Unathi, Somizi betrayed her by choosing to side with her former husband Thomas Msengana. But that was not all, Unathi alludes to saying SomG was using her (failing) marriage as part of his reality show. She goes on to say that Somizi dedicated a full episode about Unathi and her marriage on Living the Dream. Somizi is fifty something now and he has a handful of real friends. He is notorious of losing friends due to his ill behaviour, these allegations come as no surprise to us at all.
Another thing that Unathi speaks about is her family, her parents and kids as well mentioning their names (Sinako and Imbo). For years Unathi has kept her family life private especially her children. We know that her first born Sinako is now eighteen if not nineteen and he is preparing to go for circumcision school soon. She also speaks about the beautiful relationship she now has with Thomas. We like the maturity in them handling themselves well for the sake of the bambinos.
The other point Unathi mentions is that she and her lawyers have started the litigation process of suing Kaya FM for the way they fired her two years ago. She believes she has a winnable case and that Kaya’s former station manager Sibongile Mtyali made a grave error in firing her the way she did. It’s funny how also a year after Unathi was fired from the station Sibongile was dismissed too with immediate effect. The whole casa stems from the favouritism allegation on Sizwe Dhlomo’s behaviour and treatment of his colleagues. If you recall Unathi said she had enough of Sizwe disrespecting her by coming late to work. Yes, Sizwe recorded the meltdown. It was though he knew that Unathi would be fed-up. That is why Sizwe’s evidence looked compelling. If you f*ck with a person repeatedly they will one day lose their marbles, that’s what happened here. You know the saying, every dog has its day, well Kaya FM’s day is coming. Sue the sh*t out of them wena Unsta!
Unathi also took the lid of brown enveloped journalists, she makes mention of Sis Gugu, a head of Shwashwi back in the day. Gugu demanded money from Unathi and she refused. Brown enveloped journalists still live amongst us to this day, ask Arthur Mafokate, he has paid a lot of journalists for publicity. We know some of the journos, some of them have changed careers. *winks😜
A well-rounded beautiful interview and it seems as if this interview with Unathi is the first of many to come from Gareth Cliff and team. Do yourselves a favour and watch the podcast!!!
