JOBURG FILM FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS FINEST FILMS AND STORYTELLERS

Johannesburg, South Africa  – As the fifth edition of the Joburg Film Festival, presented by Multichoice, nears its close, the official awards ceremony was held last night at The Theatre on The Square in Sandton, Johannesburg. The international jury named the Egyptian feature film  “Feathers, ” directed by Omar El Zohairy, as ‘ Best Film ’ of the festival.  This absurdist tale about a patriarch transformed into a chicken has a lot to say about Egyptian culture and the role of women. The evocative black and white Ethiopian documentary ' Faya Dayi',  directed, written, starring and produced by Jessica Beshir took home the  ‘Best African Film’  award. Showmax calls for pitches for a slate of films

On the opening day of The Joburg Film Festival, Showmax released an open commissioning brief to the African film industry calling for pitches for a slate of 10 live action films.  The African streamer has won the South African Film and Television Awards’ (SAFTAs) Made-for-TV Movie Award for two years in a row, first with  Loving Thokoza  and then with  Boxing Day , the first two feature films from Mandla N. In addition, another Showmax film, Kelsey Egan’s debut feature,  Glasshouse , was the most awarded feature film overall at the SAFTAs last year, with five Golden Horns. The new brief, in partnership with the Joburg Film Festival, is aimed at finding new talent and opening up the industry. The proposals must have a first draft screenplay and be set in contemporary Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa, with a first-time director attached who is a resident or citizen in those countries. A CELEBRATION OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL CINEMA WITH OVER 60 FILMS TO BE SCREENED The Joburg Film Festival, brought to you in partnership with MultiChoice, will kick off its six-day celebration of filmmaking and storytelling excellence on Tuesday 31st January 2023, today announced the selection of the over 60 films that will be screened at the coveted festival. Following a two-year hiatus, festival organisers earlier this year confirmed the return of this leading film festival to take place in 2023. The Joburg Film Festival once again boasts a well-known and globally respected team including Zimbabwean born internationally renowned Festival Curator Keith Shiri and Film Festival Programmer, the equally established and known industry expert Jack ChiangSet to showcase some of the finest films from over 35 countries across the globe, including 20 African premieres and 27 South African premieres, the Joburg Film festival will run from Tuesday, 31st January 2023 to Sunday, 5th February 2023

2020 EDITION OF JOBURG FILM FESTIVAL FOCUSES ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. TAKING PLACE ON 27 - 29 NOVEMBER

The 2020 Joburg Film Festival will take place later this month, with a special focus on the Youth & Audience Development Programme.    Hosted in partnership with the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC) and the National Film & Video Foundation (NFVF), the Youth and Audience Development programme is a skill sharing platform that affords young aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to learn from and engage with industry professionals, This year the well-structured, intense one-day programme will be hosted by industry leaders and film experts tackling the business of online content under the apt 2020 theme “Digital Content”. The day comprises of a practical workshop by OM Films owner Ofentse Mwase and an intense masterclass by legendary TV Director Tebogo Malope. The programme will conclude with a screening by Karabo Lediga’s latest work  WHAT DID YOU DREAM.  The programme will encompass 120 youth from across the province gathered at one central location. The workshop will also be recorded
