M-Net to flight documentary on struggle Icon George Bizos

The advocate who represented Mandela honoured in compelling film   This Reconciliation Day (Saturday, 16 December), M-Net is proud to broadcast George Bizos: Icon , a documentary about the late Greek-South African human rights lawyer, on Saturday, 16 December at 22:00. The documentary will give viewers an intimate look at the life and work of one of South Africa’s most prominent struggle figures and gives them an opportunity to learn about the man that helped shape our democracy. Directed by Jane Thandi Lipman and Peter Goldsmid, the documentary interviews the likes of former president Thabo Mbeki, former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke, as well as Bizos’s children and grandchildren. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who legally represented the likes of Nelson Mandela,  Winnie Madikizela-Mandela , Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Govan Mbeki and Walter Sisulu. The BBC documentary collection Resistance in a Hostile Environment, from Oscar-winning filmmaker Sir Steve McQueen is now streaming on Showmax.

The omnibus includes  Uprising,  which won the 2022 BAFTA Award for Best Factual Series, and  Black Power: A British Story of Resistance , which was nominated for a 2022 BAFTA for Specialist Factual. Both have 100% critics’ ratings on  Rotten Tomatoes .  The documentaries examine the systemic racial injustice that shaped what it meant to be Black in Britain from the late 1960s to the early 80s, and trace the real-life stories of resistance that inspired McQueen’s five-film anthology series  Small Axe , which won BAFTA and Critics’ Choice awards among many, many others.  As  IndieWire  puts it, “ Small Axe  grew out of a desire to shed light on Black resistance movements in Britain... Twenty-year-old Othmane Zolati had never left his home country of Morocco when he started his nearly four-year journey to Cape Town, South Africa, with just $80, a small backpack, and a borrowed cheap pocket camera. Africa and I , a 90-minute documentary about his trip, is now streaming first and only on Showmax.
